The idea to just observe Jane presented itself quite logically in Walt's mind, the same as usual. His pain was leavened by the thought that he was avoiding a huge disaster for Jesse. The girl was a worm, catching Jesse's fish.
He'd never seen full-fledged heroin overdose but he knew if she was put in the recovery position, on her side, resisting death, Jane Margolis would live. It was fascinating how her vomit was killing her, her mouth open as she choked. She was not going to change, he knew an addict's shortcomings. He'd watched others. It was a choice.
Be a free man, work with the soon to be liberated addict Jesse. Now he was watching Jesse. Walt closed his eyes. Chemistry is about bonds. Then there was the relationship version. In science, there is a possible reason for everything. She could not live. Jane had ruined so much without being any the wiser. Her mouth shuddered and she hacked and swallowed and choked again. That shudder, he had it too, his distaste for being forced to make an impossible choice.
Was it sensible? No, but he had to damn his senses and just think. His "nephew" was just starting to get a new skill set. Jesse looked so innocently blissed out. What if Jesse started to choke too? Could Walt save one and not the other? But he didn't have a choice now. Jane made a hitching sound and then became quite still, the vomit still on her lips.
The invisible barrier that was his decency fell like chain mail to the ground. A free man, doing what works.
